There is nothing children enjoy more than getting hands-on and having their creativity engaged!
At the Prep School, pupils learn, create and perform. By the end of their time at the Prep School, your child would have had the chance to dismantle a computer in the name of Art, produce a glittering Entertainment Evening in Drama and perform music to many different audiences!
Performing takes courage but this is something the children grow up with from their early days in Nursery.
Through drama your child will learn empathy and good communication skills as well as developing the confidence needed to handle life’s challenges; and that’s at the same time as having a great deal of fun!
As you will see, at Ashford Prep, drama is not just contained to the stage. We know the value of drama in impactful learning and so children will use it in a diverse range of subjects, acting out stories from history or creating sketches to understand philosophical and ethical issues.
We have an active and vibrant community where children grow in confidence with many opportunities to perform. Every class presents an assembly to parents once a year and each year group stages a very special Easter and Christmas celebration.
Musical and theatrical skills are more developed in the Prep School where each year group produces a glittering Entertainment Evening showcasing poetry recitals, songs, drama sketches and musical interludes. Each class also produces a special assembly for parents once a year.
The Year 6 production is a culmination of all the years of exploration and discovery where the whole year group takes to the stage to perform a musical over a two-night run. They experience involved in staging a proper production, from lighting to makeup, from sound production to lines and songs.
Think Open-Mic and there you have it… the weekly Friday Sparktacular really is a very special platform open to every child to sing, dance, play, mime, act – anything they choose, for a few minutes in front of the whole school. It’s so popular there is usually a waiting list.
There is nothing children enjoy more than getting hands-on and they have every chance to do that at the Prep School. From Henry Moore sculptures in Year 1 to colourful outdoor displays and the chance to dismantle a computer, in Art, DT and HE our students are bombarded with opportunities to find what it is they are good at, as well as to stretch their minds and imaginations.
By the end of their time at the Prep School children will have studied a huge array of artistic styles and created work in similar fashion. Imagine how it felt to be Michaelangelo – Pre-Prep children find out by creating beautiful paintings on the underside of their desks; or how about Kandinsky? At certain times of the year, the playground is covered in colourful chalk creations.
It’s all about thinking outside the box and encouraging children to understand that there are few barriers to their creativity. They make racing cars in Design Technology, sew tapestries in Tudor style in Textiles and learn the basics of cooking by nurturing their own vegetable garden and creating recipes with the products.
There are trips to The Keeping Gallery, Dover Museum, the Turner Contemporary, the National Gallery – you get the picture.
Our all-inclusive attitude to music is at the foundation of all we do. Children from Nursery to Year 6 experiment, listen, create and perform music to many different audiences.
With three major concerts a year, the school’s seven musical ensembles are extremely busy, providing a deep and rich musical education for our children.
There’s Senior Choir, Junior Choir, Young Voices Choir, Orchestra, String Orchestra, Guitar Ensemble and a Recorder Consort.
This group of 60 singers has an eclectic repertoire which includes pieces by John Rutter, Benjamin Britten, Ronald Corp and Barry Rose. Our regular services in the parish church of St Mary’s incorporate a relevant 3-part anthem and the choir leads the congregational hymns.
We include everyone from our very beginners to our more accomplished players in these groups, giving everyone the chance to develop their musical ear and to enjoy an extensive repertoire which stretches from Tudor classics to Star Wars and traditional songs from England to Eastern Europe.
